Pulp Vs Literary Works

Pulp; yes, strictly for entertainment. (y)

When sort of fresh out of hi-school I was struck with how entertaining reading could be instead of mandated drudgery; specifically James Bond, Stephen King, a bit of James Clavell & Robert Ruark.

Years ago when I was working with a couple of publishers, they sent me their criteria for "formula books" of various types: romance, adventure, and so on.

It was literally: "in chapter five the hero/heroine makes a surprising discovery about the matter" and "in chapter six we see a softer side of the villain". And for the romance, no sex before chapter three, and at least one of them must have strong emotions about it.

No thank you.

That is now the sort of filler that is being cranked out by AI.

The only pulp I know about is the kind that is in my orange juice.
